You heard about the Zoom leak in April 2020 right? Over 500k user details sold on the Dark Web.
Well RockYou2021 is this year’s big one and it’s the largest compilation ever leaked – 8.4 BILLION passwords in a single collection! Granted, it’s likely a 100GB text file of data that combines previous data leaks, hacks and breaches, but it’s huge, and all in one place on a hacker forum on the Dark Web.
So firstly, do you check whether your or your organisation’s passwords are contained in any of these leaks? If you do, you’re one of the few who do.
Secondly, do you or any of your team use the same password across multiple platforms and sites?
Many do, most do even: there are so many to remember that there’s a good chance someone in your organisation’s Facebook or Instagram password is also at least one of their work passwords.
That’s where 2FA comes in – Two-Factor Authentication. It can be referred to as two-step verification and ensures that your password alone is not enough to hack into your account. The second factor could be a security key on your mobile phone, a geographical limit to access or a biometric factor such as your fingerprint for example.
Some people do find it annoying, but it’s why most banks now use it to protect your money and more and more websites, apps, companies and institutions are implementing 2FA or other MFA (Multi-factor Authentication) methods to protect their data as well as regularly reviewing their password policies and cyber security in general.
