THE CLIENT…

Belton Farm are a successful Shropshire-based British cheesemaker with turnover in excess of £30m.

They take their IT infrastructure and best practices seriously and see it as the backbone of their business.

THE CHALLENGE…

Belton Farm’s data backup strategy was based on comprehensive onsite local backups with a management rota to also take backups offsite.

Despite not having suffered data security breaches or data loss, they asked Skunkworks IT to advise on how the latest industry technology could improve their business continuity strategy and eliminate potential points of failure, such as physically taking backups offsite.

Testing that the backups were fully completed was resource-intensive and any damaged hardware would need to have been replaced before the time-consuming restore process could start

THE SOLUTION…

  1. Discussion on company data types, usage, file and storage size and analysis of business impact in case of a data disaster: physical damage; human error; malicious attack.
  2. Budget advice and explanation of suitable potential solutions
  3. Recommendation for Belton Farm: Datto SIRIS – Data and Systems protection. If you’re wondering: Datto is the brand, SIRIS is one of their products – an all-in-one solution for implementation by your Managed Service Provider (MSP) – Skunkworks IT in this case.
Remember that many factors influence the recommended solution!
  4. Hourly automatic backup of the company’s servers from 8am to 6pm, 7 days a week.

Note: Backups could be every 5 minutes but were not necessary for Belton Farm’s requirement.

THE RESULT…

  • Belton Farm servers are backed up locally AND offsite on the cloud via secure upload
  • Backups are available for a full year
  • Single files or folders can be restored quickly and easily
  • If a Belton Farm server has an issue, the most recent backup is available to use within five minutes on the Datto SIRIS – acting as a temporary clone (a virtual copy). This allows the IT team to repair or restore the main server, and then integrate any new data from the SIRIS clone
  • If there is a major issue – physical damage through fire, flood, theft or software damage from an attack or disk corruption – the servers can be quickly “spun up” (tech speak for started!) on the cloud, giving Belton Farm access to their servers from anywhere
  • The last backup of the day triggers the sending of a screenshot of the backup itself to Skunkworks IT to provide peace of mind that the backup was successful
  • Ransomware – that’s when your system gets hijacked and you have to pay to unblock it. Or worse…pay to NOT unblock it.
“WannaCry” was probably the most famous and far-reaching of these in 2017.
Belton Farm now have a detection system in place which tests for signs within the backup and provides an early warning.
